Historic buildings in Halling part 2
Halling has a number of historic buildings and sites and this page has photos of some of them . . . . . . .

Bourne House, 96 High Street. This example of a a type known as a Wealden House, is a timber framed building set at right angles to the High Street. The building has been carefully restored but for many years was used as three cottages. The roof has a fine carved crown post now beautifully exposed, above the first floor landing which has been left open to the roof. The finest feature of this building is the stone fireplace an unexpected find in such a house, which may have originated from the nearby Bishop's Palace. A mason's mark has been identified and it is known that the stone was quarried at Boughton, Nr Canterbury. An earlier central hearth was was uncovered during restoration, a relic of the period when the centre was an open hall. Externally the building has been much altered, both jetties are now under- pinned and much of the timber framing has been rendered over, at the western the ground level was originally at first floor level but this was lowered and a fine wall built in ragstone, again probably salvaged from the Palace has been uncovered. To the north is a short terrace of later cottages, one being a shop, which had been badly mutilated during restoration.
