Social Club/Railway Station
'I-a' This was the former site of the New Town Social Club, which is still known locally as ‘The Bolshie’ after its founders set up a rival club to the old Halling Institute in 1928. It was built on the site of an old ‘tin tabernacle’, the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel. The club moved to its current location just to the north of Stake Lane after the original club building was demolished to make way for the Halling by-pass in 1984.
'i-b' Halling Station opened in March 1890, with the first ticket being bought by the then school headmaster, Mr. John Scholey. The ticket office closed in September 1989. The Neolithic skeleton of ‘Halling Man’ was found close by in 1912. See picture below.
