Plaque 14: The Five Bells pub
There has been a building on this site for hundreds of years and one is shown on the 1634 estate map of Halling. It was probably the first pub in the village and is believed to be the “alehouse” mentioned in records dating back to events in 1586, when a Mr. William Cokar of Halling was sent to gaol for “keeping an ale house and allowing gambling”.
