The Halling History Trail

UNDER CONSTRUCTION DECEMBER 2025

The Halling History Trail – A Guide

In August 2021, the Halling Historical Society arranged for  the installation of a ‘blue plaque’ on the wall of 79 High  Street, the former home of Sergeant Thomas Harris VC  MM, to commemorate Halling’s hero of the First World  War.

When the Halling Historical Society celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025, a further 14 plaques were  commissioned, each to be placed on other buildings with  links to people or places of historical interest in Halling.

The plaques form ‘The Halling History Trail’, along with another on the Jubilee Hall for the life of Ted Gowers, a founder of the Society and author of ‘Across the Low Meadow’ history of Halling; and three other information boards about the Bishop’s Palace, the riverside lime works, and Forge Green.

This guide shows the locations of each of these plaques and  of other places of interest in Halling, as indicated on the  map below, forming a walking route around the village's historic locations. Each location is the subject of a separate subpage, as listed below.
